Choosing Paint Colors for a Child’s Room

As more people choose to use bold colors throughout the house, your child’s bedroom can be a place for your kids to shine. Kid rooms are ideal for bold, bright, and pastel paint colors. Whether your child likes colors that spark the fairy tale princess vibe, create a dinosaur hideaway, or build a colorful and fun background, you can find paint colors that capture their imagination and personality at Columbia Paint & Wallcover.

Paint colors are remarkably personal, but at Columbia Paint & Wallcover, we can work with you and your kids to help you select colors everyone is happy with. One happy family shared their success story:

  1. Come in with a list of your child’s favorite colors. Include colors they don’t like and the ones you don’t like as well.
  2. Bring fabric swatches (if possible) of furniture, window hangings, wallpaper, and any other colors in the room for reference so you can plan around your existing or new furnishings.
  3. For young kids, keep the options simple. With over 3,500 options, it can quickly become overwhelming. Instead, pull 2 or 3 colors you think they’ll like in a few shades.
  4. Be willing to compromise. If your teen wants an all-black room, consider allowing it. Colors can always be worked around and changed. Even the most intense colors can be compromised on. Bold colors like black can even be used as an accent wall—complement bold tones with wallpaper to add color and design on a feature wall.

Great Kid's Room Paint Colors

Ultimately, your tastes and your children’s tastes will influence the colors in your kid’s room, as will their room design. The good news is that any color could be perfect for your kid’s room, as long as they like it and you do, too. A good rule of thumb for any interior design is the 60-30-10 rule—meaning that 60% of a room’s interior design should be one main color family, 30% should be another, and then the final 10% should be an accent color for trim. Kid’s rooms offer more opportunities to play with color and tone.

You can even consider selecting different colors based on whether you want a themed room based on your kid’s interests:

  • Princess theme: pale pinks, royal purples, and whites and golds are key to this theme/
  • Woodland theme: Lush greens, vibrant blues, sunny yellows, and rich browns tie this theme to the forest.
  • Pirate theme: Caribbean blues, sandy beiges, and accents of red, black and white create this dynamic theme.

To make the room work best, consider:

  • Balancing bold colors with neutrals so the room doesn’t get too bright.
  • Leave the furniture neutral, and even the brightest colors will be the perfect fit for your child’s room.
  • Incorporating the paint colors into the room in other ways, like a pillow on the bed or the sheets to make the whole room look more cohesive.
  • Don’t forget paint sheen. The higher the paint sheen the easier it is to clean, but any imperfections will be more obvious.
  • Use our Color Inspiration center to look up tones before coming into the store and selecting a sample!
