Essential Paint Tools
We carry a nearly endless number of paint tools for any and every type of project, but there are some essential tools that you don’t want to start any painting job without.
- Patching & Repair Supplies: You’ll need items like spackling compound and a putty knife to repair any holes or blemishes before you paint.
- Surface Protection: Unless you plan to paint your furniture or floor, you’ll need drop cloths and plastic tarps to protect them.
- Brushes: Not just any brushes, though. You want brushes that are suited to your specific project. For example, natural bristles are best for oil-based paint, and synthetic bristles work better with water-based paint. Paint brushes also come in various end types and bristle styles to handle cutting in trim and angles or painting flat areas.
- Rollers: Rollers come in several nap lengths and materials. Choose one best suited for your job.
- Extension Pole: If you’re of average height, you’ll need the extra boost of an extension pole when painting walls and ceilings.
- Paint Storage: Trays work for small jobs. We suggest using a bucket for projects requiring more than a single container of paint so you can mix them to ensure color consistency.
Paint Sprayers
1. Airless Paint Sprayers: Airless sprayers use very high pressure to push paint through a small opening in a tip.
2. Pneumatic Air Sprayers: Also known as an air paint sprayer, this type of sprayer uses compressed air to apply paint. They tend to be messy and produce more overspray than other designs but are a cost-effective solution for those who own an air compressor; all you need is a paint gun and hose.
3. HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) Sprayers: This type of sprayer distributes paint using a large amount of low-pressure air. This allows for thicker coats of paint and more control over the spray pattern, making HVLP sprayers a good finishing tool.
Using a Paint Sprayer
- Select the type of sprayer.
- Be prepared. Sprayers use more paint than manual methods, so ensure you have enough paint to finish the job. Always paint in a well-ventilated area and wear a face mask so you don’t breathe in airborne paint particles.
- Choose the right paint. Airless sprayers are great for oil-based paint and stain, with no thinning required. Oil-based paint is also suitable for an HVLP sprayer. If you’re using a thicker paint, like water-based latex, you’ll need to thin the paint by adding ½ cup water per gallon. Stir well before use to ensure an even consistency. A pneumatic sprayer can easily handle oil, acrylic, and latex paints.
- Get in a bit of practice. If you’re new to using a paint sprayer, practice on a large piece of cardboard to get a feel for how the paint applies.
5. Start painting and keep these tips in mind:
A. Move the gun in a broad-stroke motion before pulling the trigger to avoid excess paint building up on the surface; continue the movement after you’ve released the trigger for even coverage.
B. Avoid spraying at steep angles.
C. Wipe the tip regularly with a cloth to prevent the paint from drying and affecting the spray pattern.
